Camden County Workforce Investment Board

Supporting the Development and Retention of a World Class Workforce

Re-Entry Committee

The Camden County Workforce Investment Board in partnership with a diverse mix of service providers, faith based and community based agencies, elected officials and criminal justice representatives is committed in its support of ex-offenders returning to work from incarceration.
Research shows that ex-offeners who obtain employment have lower rates of recidivism especially when in conjunction with stable housing, addiction and mental health services and positive peer associations.

The Camden County One-Stop Career Center
offers a wide range of tools to help people find a new job or career. Some of the job search tools available to individuals include: workforce information, job listings, training providers, career advice and a computer system to match jobseekers’ skills and aptitudes with current job openings, training programs (including skills and basic education classes in public or private vocational and trade schools) and on-the-job training and apprenticeships in many fields. In a reemployment workshop, jobseekers learn how to look for a job, what to do at an interview and how to conduct an effective job search. This information can be especially helpful to ex-offenders, in understanding the labor market and preparing to answer tough questions on a job application form.

Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services:
The DVRS provides services that enable persons with disabilities to find jobs. These disabilities can include physical, mental or other problems, including treatment for addictions. DVRS also offers assistance to persons who are having problems keeping their jobs. Many of these services are applicable to ex-offenders.

Employer Incentives:
To encourage employers to work with harder to place individuals, LWD can offer financial and other incentives for companies that hire qualified individuals. In addition to any opportunities for on-the-job training (OJT) and apprenticeship programs which may be available through some local One-Stop Career Centers, employers may benefit from bonding and tax credit services offered to assist all qualified jobseekers.

Federal Bonding Program:
provides fidelity bonding insurance coverage to employers for individuals with criminal histories and other high-risk applicants who are qualified, but fail to get jobs because regular commercial bonding is denied due to their backgrounds. Bonding is a unique tool to help a job applicant get and keep a job. It is a business insurance policy that protects an employer against any loss of money or property due to employee dishonesty. It can serve as a guarantee to employers that a person hired will be an honest worker.

Work
Opportunity Tax Credit: a Federal program designed to encourage employers to hire persons such as former offenders who have difficulty in securing employment.  Employers agreeing to participate in this program can receive tax credit on their Federal taxes.
